munchkin meals: 14 month eats

So, I kind of missed last month’s Munchkin Meals, which I was pretty bummed about, but I was not going to let it happen again this month! I love seeing how what we prepare gets consumed by Nia, especially when I start making meals she hasn’t had yet!

I’ve actually noticed a tremendous improvement in what and how she eats since her last Munchkin Meals post; she’s getting a better hang of things that need more chewing and, luckily, has a very easy palate to please! Once those molars come in that have been causing us so much nightly grief, she might turn into an eating machine more than she is now!

This month, Nia does what I like to call “shoveling”, where she pretty much scarfs anything into her mouth, sometimes without looking. That must either mean that all my meals are just that good that it doesn’t matter what I put down in front of her, or that she has complete trust that I would never give her something inedible. Either way, I’ll take it as a compliment ;). (Or, that she just does not care at all and wants to eat, and in that case, she’s truly her father’s daughter; eating everything within arm’s reach.)

I’ve chosen to show you what some of her meals have looked like in the past month (at 14 months), and then I’ll quickly cover some of her favourites and what she’s not enjoying.

 Meal #1: Roasted carrots and sweet potatoes with BBQ’d tofu.

She cannot get enough of this BBQ sauce (but neither can we). She always gobbles up the tofu right away! This meal was left with some carrots and sweet potato, but no tofu remained!

Meal #2: Deconstructed red-hot BLTs (toast with vegenaise, shredded carrots, tomatoes, sprouts, avocado and tempeh in a hot sauce marinade)

The tempeh was a little too hot for her this time around (she’s had it once before this and did fine), so she stuck to avocado (one of her faves) and the toast. I did manage to give her some of the tempeh, as long as it was paired with something else.

Meal #3: Whole-wheat pasta in homemade tomato sauce.

Nia loved the noodles and pretty much picked up anything within contact of the noodle going into her mouth.

Meal #4: Lentil sloppy joes with a toasted Ezekiel bun.

This meal is probably the biggest hit for everything getting eaten. She practically cleans the tray every time, which I love, because then I know she’s getting: green lentils, tomatoes, bell peppers, mushrooms, onion, celery and carrots (and a few sunflower sprouts that I threw in there, as well).

Meal #5: Homemade whole-wheat pizza (dough) with veggies (spinach, orange bell pepper, red onion, mushrooms) and mozzarella Daiya cheese.

This was her first time having homemade pizza and she did ok. Not as much in her belly as I thought, but that could be my bad for not thinning the pizza dough out more. That’s what I get for having a hiatus of homemade pizza ;).

Meal #6: Soups. A vegan broccoli cheddar (with a cashew-base), which she thoroughly enjoyed.

And, a butternut squash bisque, that had a bit of a kick, but she still came back for bites!

With soups, I still spoon-feed her, but am looking to really work on fork and spoon skills this next month. I always lay either a fork or spoon on her tray (depending on what she’s eating), but she’ll normally grab it and put the opposite end in her mouth. We’ll get that sorted out soon enough, I hope!

Meal #7: Kamut udon noodles with stir-fried veggies in a spicy peanut sauce.

This is what we had last night and she loved it! I’ve only ever made this dish before Nia was on solids, and I’m glad she enjoyed it because it’s one of our faves. Last night’s veggie mix included: zucchini, onion, carrots, orange bell pepper, kale, bok choy, and celery with ginger, garlic, and sriracha in the peanut sauce.

Other things she loves snacking on include: hummus and crackers, cereal, oatmeal, coconut milk ice-cream, coconut milk yogurt with frozen berries, toast, french toast, pancakes, fresh fruit, and granola bars/larabars.

She pretty much enjoys 95% of what she eats. The only problem that has compromised the enjoyment is the spiciness of some items (like the hot tempeh, but, not the tempeh, itself). Also, I think she might have a tad bit of a texture issue with undercooked veggies, like, for example, if carrots have a crunch to them, they get spit out, and I think why the thick pizza dough was spit out when she was eating it.

I love that she knows what she doesn’t like, but I could do with a little less of the just spitting it out of her mouth to fall down the front of her ;). Other than the odd thing here and there, she’s a solid eater, and I’m so happy for that!

Question: What was the first food item that your baby showed a real distaste for?

Also wanted to wish my sister, Jaclyn, a very happy birthday today!!! She is officially legal drinking age (in Canada) and it boggles my mind. Her, my mom, Nia and I are going for lunch today to celebrate!!

    I want to eat every Mia eats- WOW, delicious!! I would stick my hand right into that pasta dish, too 😉

    What BBQ sauce do you use? I’m constantly on a look out for a good one and maybe we have it here in the US?

    Also, do you have a recipe for the cashew based broccoli soup? MM! Off to go eat breakfast now because I’m starving… thanks for linking up!
